SMPS Repair Manual – The 3 Critical Requirements of a Superior Quality SMPS Repairing Guide

It's not easy to find a superior quality SMPS repair manual. Trust me, I spent days trying to find one that provides precise repairing instructions that are simple to understand, and easy to follow.

Lucky for you, I've finally found what I think is the best guide on repairing switch mode power supply. Therefore you don't have to spend days trawling one website after another like I did!

Now, I regard this particular SMPS repair manual as top-notch simply because it met my 3 critical requirements.

Here's the 3-step critical requirement that every superior quality repairing guide must live up to, otherwise forget about it…

Requirement 1: Make sure the manual provides elaborate introductory content.

Some guides lack proper introductory content. They just hurl you straight into action! That's not a good thing especially if you're newbie or intermediate technicians who are still fuzzy about the functionality of a SMPS.

Therefore, make sure you get an SMPS troubleshooting manual that gives easy to follow info on how to read and analyze block diagram of a SMPS, how to identify components, how to properly interpret a SMPS's schematic diagrams, how to understand circuit patterns and so on.

Requirement 2: Make sure it offers comprehensive "T.S.T"

T.S.T stands for tools, safety rules, and troubleshooting techniques. I know of a few SMPS repair manuals that do not disclose adequate info on these 3 very important sub-topics.

A good manual will tell you what are the testing tools needed to carry out optimal repairing work (there are 8 in total), comprehensive safety rules and of course, ample of troubleshooting and repairing methods - all presented in a step-by-step way.

Requirement 3: Make sure the manual includes multiple case studies and "expert consultation" benefit.

I believe case studies are very important because they provide insights on how to solve various SMPS problems. However, that's nothing compared to getting consultation from an expert…

Imagine this: Any problems you might have while repairing an SMPS…you obtain the necessary solutions by simply contacting an electronics repairing expert through email! Now, that's what I call SUPERIOR quality!

By the way, you can download an SMPS repair manual that meets the aforementioned requirements and more including full systematic instructional photos and diagrams.

Computer SMPS Service Manual – Detailed Information on Finding Gold Quality SMPS Repair Manual

If you need a computer SMPS service manual, then allow me to share with you a few tips to ensure you get only the best quality manual.

I know it's not easy to find a high-quality manual for servicing and repairing switch mode power supplies or SMPS. Actually, I've downloaded a couple of PDF repair guides but they weren't much help.

Here are some negative things about those guides…

(1) The instructions were difficult to understand.

(2) The instructions were not organized in a proper manner. For example, basic chapters like "understanding SMPS components" and "how to read schematic diagrams" were placed at the END of the manual!

And worst of all…

(3) Those computer SMPS service manuals did not have any step-by-step photo instructions!

Now I'm going to tell you how I discovered the best guide on troubleshooting and fixing all types of SMPS – not just computer SMPS.

The first thing I did was visit an online forum that is related to the subject of electronics. Believe me, you'll find many seasoned technicians hanging around electronics forums.

Some are very friendly and would be willing to offer valuable tips, advice and resources. In fact, I found a very high quality computer SMPS service manual thru recommendation from a respected forum member.

So you should definitely seek help from online forums. If you post your questions properly, you'd great answers from forum members including links to the best resources on repairing SMPS.

A couple more tips…

Make sure you get a SMPS repair guide that teaches you everything in a step-by-step fashion AND provides in-depth information on safety guidelines, tools and test equipment to conduct proper SMPS repair and troubleshooting.

Some SMPS reparation manuals do not provide such information which I think is a shame because topics on safety and testing tools are absolutely crucial.

Lastly…And this is very, very important!

Try obtaining a manual that includes PERSONAL email consultation support from technicians who are experts in repairing SMPS.

If you have personal email access to an expert, then I guarantee you'll have very little trouble repairing faulty switch mode power supplies.

Think about it, any problems you may have can easily be addressed by sending an email to the expert. Now that's POWERFUL!

Switching Power Supply Repair – Discover 3 Must Avoid Mistakes When Repairing SMPS

Before conducting a switching power supply repair work, there are a few mistakes that you MUST avoid!

Right now, we're going to take a look at 3 of the most common mistakes that newbie technicians make when repairing switch mode power supplies or SMPS.

Heck, even seasoned technicians commit these mistakes as well…

How about you? Do you make these mistakes when conducting switching power supply repair?

Mistake #1

You lack experience but refuse to follow repair manuals that are presented in a step-by-step manner accompanied with lots of photos and examples.

You see, I know a few technicians who prefer to follow text-intensive SMPS repair manuals as their only reference guide. They say that manual with complete step-by-step photos are meant only for "beginners".

I totally disagree! If you want to solve your SMPS problems as quickly as possible, then I suggest you refer repair manuals that are photo intensive. You'll learn to fix SMPS a lot faster with that sort of manual.

Believe me, most text intensive repair manuals are very hard to follow!

Speaking of photo intensive repair manual, here's one that's pretty decent (271 pages)... Manual for repairing SMPS (please note that a new window will open)

Mistake #2

Shot circuit problem in the output line and you refuse to remove the components in that section one at a time. Don't be lazy! I used to take ages to isolate problems in the output line because I was too lazy to troubleshoot one component at a time.

Trust me, with enough practice you'll be able to remove the components and isolate the problem at lightning speed.

Taking shortcuts is not recommended when it comes to switching power supply repair…

Mistake #3

You replaced the power IC without checking it thoroughly. This is a pretty common problem and I did it a few times when I first began repairing SMPS units.

If you think the issue lies with the power FET for instance, I recommend you inspect the power IC properly before replacing it.

You can actually make your own IC testing tool. And then use this tester on the power IC to assess its condition.

Don't simply replace because you'll be wasting money if the power IC turns out to be in good condition.

Yes, you can learn how to build your own power IC AND also zener diode tester by following step-by-step guides that are packed together with the 271+ pages switching power supply repair manual.

Repairing SMPS – What You MUST Know About Repairing SMPS

Repairing SMPS while wearing a blindfold…is that possible?

Of course not! Do not try to fix an SMPS unit while putting on a blindfold!

Sorry for bringing up that question. See, several nights ago my buddies got crazy drunk (I was slightly drunk too) and he asked me that question…I thought it was a really stupid but funny question :)

I can't imagine anyone repairing SMPS on a blindfold. Only a dumb maniac would attempt such a thing…

Anyway, sorry for getting off topic, just thought I'd share the fun. Now, if you need some SMPS repair tips, then let me share a few pointers with you.

Heck, I'll even tell you what SMPS repair manual I personally use to jack up my fixing and troubleshooting skills. By the way, you can look it up via the link below:

Photo-based SMPS instructional repair guide

Now, take a look at the following tips for solving your switch mode power supply repair issues…You ought to know them!

Basic yet often overlooked problem…

Check for faulty or incorrectly positioned voltage selector switch. I've seen this happen many times. The equipment is moved around resulting in the aforementioned problem. Accidents happen…

Look sharp!

Upon removing the casing – look sharp! Look for what? Well, look at each component…Perhaps the electrolytic capacitors are broken or slightly loose? Decayed glue impeding components? Too much dust?

Repairing SMPS can be hard if there are layers upon layers of dust covering the components. So, get a mini vacuum.

Promptly change the damaged capacitors. As for decayed glue, just remove by scraping carefully as to avoid damaging the affected parts.

Solder of fortune…

Yes, you read that right - solder of fortune. You see, it may cause you a small fortune should you mess up the soldering process!

SMPS failure may also be caused by shoddy solder connection job by the manufacturers.

Use the right soldering items e.g. a fine tip one for small sized components, while a soldering gun is ideal for bigger sized parts.

Repair Bible?

If you want a really, really thick bible-like guide on repairing SMPS, be sure to get one that has lots of easy to follow pictures and diagrams. If it offers personal email support from the author, that's even better!
