SMPS Problem – Top 5 Extremely Common SMPS Problems!

I started learning how to repair switch mode supplies (commonly abbreviated as SMPS) about a year ago. Thing were pretty rough initially. I couldn't fix a single SMPS problem at first!

Problem 3: Decayed Glue

I find this problem most annoying. It's such a drag to scrape off decayed glue that has covered multiple SMPS components! The hardest part is that you have to do it in a very measured fashion or risk damaging the components' delicate outer layers.

Problem 4: Micro Crack

On large-sized components, micro cracks are quite noticeable. But they are not quite visible on smaller-sized components so you're going to need a magnifying glass to catch them!

Tip Number Three

How is your sense of smell? Sorry…I ask you this because in order to detect a very common yet often overlooked SMPS problem, you need to have a rather keen sense of smell.

Burnt coil is a very common issue but it's not easy to detect if the damage occurs in the internal winding section. That's why you need to smell it!

However if your sense of smell is not working so well, don't worry…I can't smell very well either because I used to smoke for 15 years (just quit recently)!

Examine the outputs located in the secondary area of your SMPS. Understand this: SMPS units are built with different number of outputs. Each one linked to a single circuit.

I've fixed all kinds of SMPS problems – both minor and major ones. And in all cases, I would isolate the problem as soon as possible. I suggest you do the same.

You must be able to identify exactly which section of the SMPS is causing the issue. You'll save a LOT of time this way!

Damaged SMPS components…

Inspect every section carefully to see if there's any broken/loose/totally detached component. Look at the primary section. Is the power IC working correctly?

Take out your UC3842 IC Tester unit to measure the power IC. Damaged capacitors is also one the most common SMPS problems so check those as well.

Main circuit board problems…

Noticed the power supply LED blinking/dim/ shutdown? If yes, then you should measure each component in the main area of SMPS. Aside from the main section; do check the secondary area as well.

Fan problem…

Trying to repair an ATX switch mode power supply? Inspect the fan! The fan is vital for sucking heat from the components. If the fan doesn't work properly, then excessive heat will occur, resulting in complete shutdown of your ATX SMPS.
