Mistake #1

You lack experience but refuse to follow repair manuals that are presented in a step-by-step manner accompanied with lots of photos and examples.

You see, I know a few technicians who prefer to follow text-intensive SMPS repair manuals as their only reference guide. They say that manual with complete step-by-step photos are meant only for "beginners".

I totally disagree! If you want to solve your SMPS problems as quickly as possible, then I suggest you refer repair manuals that are photo intensive. You'll learn to fix SMPS a lot faster with that sort of manual.

Believe me, most text intensive repair manuals are very hard to follow!

Mistake #2

Shot circuit problem in the output line and you refuse to remove the components in that section one at a time. Don't be lazy! I used to take ages to isolate problems in the output line because I was too lazy to troubleshoot one component at a time.

Trust me, with enough practice you'll be able to remove the components and isolate the problem at lightning speed.

Taking shortcuts is not recommended when it comes to switching power supply repair…

Mistake #3

You replaced the power IC without checking it thoroughly. This is a pretty common problem and I did it a few times when I first began repairing SMPS units.

If you think the issue lies with the power FET for instance, I recommend you inspect the power IC properly before replacing it.

You can actually make your own IC testing tool. And then use this tester on the power IC to assess its condition.

Don't simply replace because you'll be wasting money if the power IC turns out to be in good condition.
